City
Uses State Funds to Buy Property
Excerpt from April 2005 - Bastrop Daily
Enterprise
The City
of Bastrop used a portion of a $1.5 million grant from the
State of Louisiana to purchase the Ditto Apparel
complex. Representative McDonald, who worked with Mayor
Hawkins in securing state money for the project joins in the
ceremony to acquire the 150,000 square foot building.
Additional funding will be used to refurbish the building to
attract a business to replace some of the 900 jobs lost when
the plant closed in 1997. Ditto's Jimmy Jones was one of
the last company employees to leave Bastrop. Jones said
that Bastrop had offered incredible work force while they were
here. Hawkins said the building is in an area designated
a Renewal Community and Enterprise Zone and will make tax
programs available to potential business. It is also
located next to the Louisiana Technical College, near U.S.
Highway 165 and a new fiber optic network.
