A
new 600,000-gallon storage tank facility located at the Donaldson Plant will
allow People's Water Service to have more pressure in its lines to serve
residential, commercial, and industrial customers.
Assistant
manager Mitch Acree said this storage tank replaces the 50-year old Liberty
Street storage tank that was closed about three years ago.
Manager
Fernando Calvo said the new Donaldson facility will greatly improve
service to customers all over Bastrop.
The
new facility also will aid emergency workers in case of a fire since they
will now have an extra source for water, Calvo said.
"It's
been a while in the making, and with the growth here in Bastrop, it was
definitely needed to meet that demand," Acree said. "It
will provide better service-by helping to distribute pressure-to our
residential, commercial and industrial customers."
Work
on the Donaldson Plant was financed by the rate increase that was approved by
the Public Service Commission February 2005. The groundbreaking at
Donaldson Street was held July 2005, and work was completed last month.
With
the addition of the Donaldson facility, People's Water Service Company now
has four storage tanks located within the community.
Future
efforts include the renovation of the elevated storage tank located on Ogden
Street. That work should begin in July. The job will consist of
touch-up painting on the outside of the tank, and sand-blasting on the
interior. It should take about 60 days to complete, Acree said.
Bids
are also being accepted for the demolition of the Liberty Street storage
tank. That work may be completed by the end of 2006, or sometime next
year.
