SMI Companies, Inc. now has
Bastrop Location SMI Companies, Inc. of Franklin, Louisiana moves forward to open a branch facility in Bastrop, Louisiana. Work is nearing completion to retrofit an existing fabrication shop located in the Coulter Industrial Park to suite the needs of this growing Louisiana business. When owners Benny Splane and Roger Moore began their company in 1987, the Gulf Coast offered a fertile environment in which to build a successful business. Dedicated and committed to meeting the demands of the Oil and Gas Industry along the Gulf Coast, the company has expanded to serve other industries nationwide with the same standard of excellence. The company manufactures bulk materials handling equipment, mechanical packages, pressure vessels, piping systems, and onsite construction and maintenance services for their customers. Company management looked at Northeast Louisiana to provide skilled labor for continued growth and also found a diversified location that offers flexibility to conduct some operations at a non-coastal area. Morehouse Parish and adjoining West Carroll Parish have a reputation for producing high quality welders and craft labor. In 2002, SMI Business Development Manager Ron Bonin had a favorable impression of this area and workforce while working on the CLECO Power Plant West of Bastrop. In addressing the current labor demands for the Company, Morehouse Parish looked like a promising destination for expansion. SMI Companies, Inc. in a bold move will seek to develop additional workforce with assistance from the Louisiana Technical College Bastrop Campuses. This fully equipped facility will work with the company to attract and provided training for those interested in a new career, improve skills or complete Certifications. Representative Charles McDonald has worked to secure funding to expand the programs offered at the local campus. School officials have indicted that this new opportunity for the area has already increased interest and enrollment in related programs. Morehouse Economic Development, Corporation and the City of Bastrop worked closely with Louisiana Economic Development to assist SMI Companies in this expansion. The project will benefit the region and included participation of the Northeast Louisiana Alliance and Enterprise Corporation of the Delta. The Department of Labor continues to be an integral part in the success of the project and job applicants are encouraged to apply at the Job Service Center at 250 Holt Drive in Bastrop or at their local Job Service Center. |
