SUPER WALMART DEVELOPMENT Bastrop Mayor Clarence Hawkins is quoted as saying that the new development "is the key, cornerstone to what we feel will be additional retail development to the area." The Bastrop Board of Aldermen has adopted ordinances to allow the city to secure loans from Wal-Mart to make street, sewer, water and other improvements for the development. Increased sales tax revenues are projected to fund repayment of the loan. Construction is expected to begin this Fall. Mayor Hawkins projects the opening of the new store in late 2006 or early 2007
Report from Bastrop City Council Meeting
December 8, 2005 Pan American Engineering Company representative Ron Bordelon appeared to seek approval for advertisement of improvement projects related to the Wal-Mart Development. The board authorized the advertisement for public bids for the sewer, water and highway improvement projects. This signals the start of the location of the store at Peach Orchard Road and U.S. Highway 165. Bordelon said the sewer project would consist of installing gravity mains and lift stations. Water line extensions would run to the Wal-Mart site providing water service and would include eight-in and twelve inch lines to provide adequate fire protection. A turn lane into the store paring lot would be provided under the highway improvement project. He said Wal-mart would handle the bids to construct the store building itself through private contractors, but the other three projects would be open to local contractors. Excerpt
