Bastrop High School Redevelopment Project

The Old Bastrop High School - aerial view - CLICK FOR CLOSUPPlans to renovate the historic Bastrop High School into a senior housing complex received a $500,000 grant.  Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded the grant to aid the Friends of Main Street's efforts to convert the building into 79 housing units.  The project will stimulate growth of retailers in the downtown area.

The restoration will boost Bastrop’s stature in retention and attraction of retirees to help secure Bastrop as a certified Louisiana retirement community. Based on a marketing study, this project may attract Arkansas retirees into northeast Louisiana as potential tenants. Other economic benefits include an increased tax base and the creation of an economic development engine. A wellness center in an existing building located near the school is envisioned.

Since the school is located in the medical community, other health care related businesses may be develop as a result of the school’s restoration.

The time-line on this project began in 2001 when the school was annexed into the Bastrop Historical District by the City of Bastrop. The community was then surveyed to determine what value the citizens had for the beautiful old school and if they would support the work that would be necessary to save the facility. The Community overwhelmingly responded that the restoration would be supported and the work began immediately to save the school.
