Economic Profile

The economy of Morehouse Parish was built upon the strengths it provides to the community: its people, businesses, work force, education system, low cost of living and transportation system. Like many other parishes located outside of a major metropolitan area, it also has utilized the resources of Louisiana's Northeast Region (Caldwell, Franklin, Jackson, Lincoln, Morehouse, Ouachita, Richland and Union), an 8-parish area that provides a 143,000-person labor force.

For years Morehouse Parish was dependent upon its largest employer, International Paper, yet because of its proactive approach to economic development, parish and local officials have been able to attract small and medium sized businesses that are building a solid foundation for future economic growth.

The various industries currently in the parish include:

  • paper and packaging,

  • plastic auto parts,

  • transportation/warehousing,

  • trucking, and

  • industrial construction and galvanizing.

The healthcare sector and retail trade also contribute heavily to the economy.
